Moving to MacDill AFB in Tampa Florida?
Here are a few tips to help make things a little smoother when you arrive.
When moving to MacDill Air Force Base (AFB) in Florida, it's important to take the following steps:
Contact the base housing office: Contact the housing office as soon as you know your move-in date to inquire about on-base housing options and waitlists. If on-base housing is not available or not desired, begin your search for off-base housing options. This is where I come in!
Make travel arrangements: Plan your travel to MacDill AFB, whether by car, plane, or other means. Make sure to coordinate with the base's transportation office if you need assistance with transportation from the airport. If you are coming to town for home tours, I can help you with transportation as well.
Pack and prepare: Pack your belongings and prepare for the move. Make sure to label all boxes and keep important documents and valuables with you during the move. I am sure this isn’t your first move, you are a “seasoned mover” but sometimes we get so wrapped up in the process we forget about the minor things. Here is your reminder!
Register for services: Register for utilities and other services, such as cable and internet, at your new location. This is assuming you have already purchased a new home or secured housing on base. I can help you with the utility information if you are moving off base.
Check-in: Check-in at the base's welcome center or housing office upon arrival to complete any remaining paperwork and receive information on base services and resources. This is a good idea so you can get familiar with MacDill AFB.
Get involved: Familiarize yourself with the base and community by getting involved in activities and organizations. Prior to moving here, I suggest you join some of the Facebook pages to help out. As a military spouse and someone who has lived here for 16 years, I can give you some recommendations on which ones to join and which ones to stay away from. I can also help answer any questions you may have but joining Facebook can help meet new people, maybe lifetime friends!
Weather: Florida is known for its hot and humid summers, so be prepared for the heat. Hurricanes can also be a concern, so it is important to have a plan in case of a storm. Keep an eye out for my hurricane checklist! Pro Tip – put an umbrella in your car for rainy summer days. It is also not a bad idea to have a small hand towel to wipe off after getting caught in the rain.
Explore the area: Take time to explore the Tampa area and discover all the city has to offer, from its beaches and theme parks to its restaurants and cultural attractions. Tampa is a beautiful city! I find it quite magical. There are so many places to visit!
Welcome to Tampa! I know you are going to love it as much as I do!
